Park Avenue DOT "Skeleton" Board Cautions Drivers to Slow Down

The New York City Department of Transportation has placed an electronic sign on the eastbound side of Park Avenue near Ryerson Street to encourage drivers to slow down, Myrtle Minutes first reported.

The board advertises the road's speed limit of 30 mph, as well as a message that asks drivers to "slow down." If that wasn't enough, the caution comes with a skeleton stick figure to really drive home the importance of following the speed limit.

The board will remain in its current location for one month before DOT relocates it, Myrtle Minutes noted.

A pedestrian struck at 40 mph is more than three times as likely to be killed than a pedestrian struck at 30 mph, according to DOT.

MARP released a Park Avenue Safety Plan last summer, with proposals to increase Park Avenue safety for drivers and pedestrians.

Park Avenue has long been a concern for Fort Greene and Clinton Hill residents and drivers who encounter the busy stretch of road.

In February, a 13-year-old boy was struck by a van as he tried to cross over Park Avenue at Cumberland Avenue against the light. Brought to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, the boy underwent surgery for head trauma.
