Nov. 11: Honoring Our Veterans

Taking a moment to remember those who served.

1. Assemblywoman Joan Millman, D-Brooklyn, announced Wednesday that she had enlisted the help of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand to help rehabilitate the Brooklyn War Memorial at Cadman Plaza—erected to honor the approximately 300,000 Brooklynites who served during World War II. Interestingly, the monument is the only one in the five boroughs specifically dedicated to WWII, according to Millman.

2. The Brooklyn Navy Yard's new visitor center, , an exhibition space and job training facility, will open to the public today. Hours are noon to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. Admission is free Nov. 11-13.

3. Admission to the Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont St. at Clinton Street in Brooklyn Heights, is free today for veterans. The BHS building is ADA accessible.

4. All branches of the Brooklyn Public Library, including and , are closed today for the Veterans Day holiday. In addition, all post offices are closed.

5. Alternate side parking rules are suspended, though meters must still be repaid.
