No End In Sight to Friday Night (No) Lights in Commodore Barry Park

Project to provide illumination for evening sports and recreation still hasn't gotten off the ground.

Parks Department officials confirmed this week what frustrated Fort Greene soccer, baseball and, yes, even cricket players already know: It's going to a awhile yet before the lights are ever turned on in for night games and practices.

"It is too early to have any details on what the project will entail," said a Parks spokeswoman.

News of the holdup comes as Councilwoman Letitia James, D-Fort Greene, told Patch that $815,000 in City Council discretionary funds had recently been secured for the project.

Those funds will not be enough to cover the costs of the project with an estimated price tag of a few million dollars.

Earlier this week, , calling it a distraction from the issue of long-awaited repairs and upgrades to play areas like Commodore Barry and Clinton Hill's .

"If they really want to fight obesity in our children then they should start funding our parks," she said.
