Nabe Home to Some of Brooklyn's Best (and Worst) Blocks

The L Magazine's list saves some space for Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

The L Magazine recently rounded up their (completely subjective) 50 Best Blocks in Brooklyn list, and somehow Fort Greene and Clinton Hill managed to take honors in both of the best and worst categories.

South Portland Avenue, between Lafayette and DeKalb, took the prize for "Best Block for Brownstones" out of the hands of Park Slopers, with the L Magazine admiring the homes’ "original detailing, new chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves."

In the "Best Block for Mansions" category, the winner went to Clinton Avenue, between DeKalb and Willoughby, for Charles Pratt’s family compound, consisting of the "grandiose Italianate-Greek Revival pileups" that he built for himself and his adult sons, says the magazine.

Carlton Avenue, between DeKalb and Willoughby, was dubbed the "Best Block to Live On," because of its concentration of brownstones, trees and backyards, proximity to Fort Greene Park and DeKalb’s restaurant scene, as well as bike lanes.

Funny enough, nearby on Park Avenue, between Cumberland and Carlton, was named the "Worst Block to Live On," mostly for the loud and clogged nearby Tillary exit of the BQE, as well as "Park Avenue’s steady traffic drone echoing up under the overpass" and the "charmless" discount liquor store.
