It Takes Two to Tango: Experience Argentina Without Leaving Ft. Greene
Our parenting columnist says that dance lessons are a great way to take a break from the kids.
My son is a good son. I’ve enjoyed almost every moment spent with him in his short life. Even, I would say, 25 percent of his ear piercing shrieks that make me imagine he is singing “Ave Maria” at the Met.
And while I’ve spent time apart from him to go the office or while he has traveled, his mother has yet to leave his side 4 months into motherhood. She doesn’t seem to mind at all. But, I’m thinking it might be time for a short staycation — just mommy and me.
Our last staycation is one I’d highly recommend to other parents who are looking for a brief get away from their little ones. The Mark Morris Dance Group has a school that offers Beginner Tango Lessons and last year the wife and I signed up to get footloose through a six class series that costs $130 for couples. Now, I have two giant left feet and my hips don’t move unless the rest of my body moves with them. Baryshnikov wouldn’t have felt threatened.
But the wife appreciated the effort, the teacher was excellent, and after several classes I could envision myself in Buenos Aires at a Milonga (even if that vision had me mostly sitting at the bar).
