Great Escape: Greenlight Bookstore

There's no better way to spend a cold afternoon than snuggling up with a good book from your local bookstore.

In an age of eBooks and big box retailers, it seems hard to remember the old days when the corner bookstore was the place to be for the best reads.

It’s not such a distant memory for Fort Greene though.

, which just celebrated its two-year anniversary, is a great escape from those department store-like booksellers we’ve grown so accustomed to.

Greenlight has books of course, lots of books, but the store is also super active in the community, hosting story time days every Saturday and Sunday.

Due to the busy holiday season, the story time events are postponed, but they’ll start up again really soon in January.

Until then, Greenlight Bookstore has something very special planned for the festive air of the December month.

This year, Greenlight will be holding a Holiday Stories and Sing Along event on Dec. 16, starting at 6 p.m.

Bring the kids along and they can clap and sing to their favorite holiday tunes and stories, like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins, and 'Twas the Night Before Christmas.

Children's singer Miss Nina will be there, along with her pink guitar, to sing some holiday songs while everybody enjoy holiday treats from the next door.

Children are welcome, if not encouraged, to wear pajamas or their favorite holiday attire.

is located at 686 Fulton St. (between S. Elliott Place and S. Portland Avenue) and is open every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. So stop in, say hello to owners Jessica and Rebecca, and grab a couple books from your local friendly neighborhood bookstore.
