Great Escape! Geocaching in the Neighborhood

This week's staycation idea involves a global positioning device and some well-worn sneakers.

This week’s staycation idea is for the technology savvy: a treasure hunt that utilizes global positioning systems. Have you ever heard of geocaching? Well, neither had I, until my brother told me he was doing it in Portland.

My first thought was that it had do with finding money hidden in different places. I had images of young Oregonian hipsters furiously spinning the wheels on their bikes with a G.P.S. device attached desperately seeking funds to buy new skinny jeans that had a vintage look.

But a quick Internet search answered my question of whether geocaching existed in Brooklyn. I logged onto the site, entered my zip code and read about items stashed at Steiner Studios and Greene Gardens that could be located using the provided coordinates.

There were also comments on the site indicating that Brooklynites had located the hidden items and lived to type about them. Now I have visions of this playing out like an episode of “The Amazing Race” starring me and my wife in this week’s staycation.
