Great Escape! Check Out the Chinese New Year Celebrations
Our dad/columnist suggests you make the journey to Flushing, Queens for a "staycation."
The Chinese Lunar New Year is upon us and the Year of the Rabbit is suppossed to be my year — at least that is what Yuen has informed me.
Yuen Sui Yau runs my favorite dry cleaning business on DeKalb Avenue between Cumblerland Street and Carlton Avenue. I stopped by his Chinese Laundry and Dry Cleaning Monday morning to tell him I was afraid his business was about to take a hit.
I used to be his number one customer, but for the time being have traded in the business suit for a new uniform of jeans and a sweatshirt (scented with a dab of regurgitated milk from my young son’s mouth).

Because the year of the rabbit is my year, Yuen suggested I visited some Chinese New Year celebrations. This was the perfect idea for this week’s staycation.
Yuen mentioned two celebrations that I am considering checking out with the
family. Flushing, Queens is bringing in the new year on Feb. 12 with a parade beginning at 11 a.m. near Union St and 39th Avenue. There should be firecrackers, dancing dragons, and traditional performances. He assures me it will be almost as nice as visiting his home town of Hong Kong.
Once the parade stops he tells me the party keeps going at Flushing Town Hall on Northern Boulevard, not that far away from Citi Field. A dance sampler starts at 1 p.m. and seems to go until next year — the Year of the Dragon!
