Grab and Go! Where to Take the Kids This Weekend

Five great recession-proof things to do with the kids this weekend.

The world maybe on the verge of another economic downturn, but that doesn't mean you have to spend the whole weekend darning socks by candlelight. With this weekend's recession-buster event picks, you can still party like it's 1999.

Parents and Babies Screenings

What? Cobble Hill Cinemas opens its doors early on Fridays to accommodate moms and dads who may not be getting out to the movies much these days. (Babies are welcome!) This week's showing is The Help, an adaptation of the hugely popular novel of the same name set in Mississippi in the '60s. Plus with all the money you're saving on babysitting, you can afford that $4 box of milk duds!

Kid Crafts at the Library

What? Friday afternoon art time at the Walt Whitman Library. Free crafts to build and take home, and as a bonus, you can pick up some final summer reading titles in the same stop!

Free Friday Night Jam: Charles Moore Dance Theatre

What? In this final event of its free Friday night summer series, the Brooklyn Children's Museum’s rooftop presents the work of one of the oldest black arts organizations in Brooklyn. Founded by the late, great Charles Moore and current Artistic Director, Ella Thompson Moore, the company’s colorful African, Caribbean and African-American dance programs have thrilled New York audiences for over 35 years.

Where? Brooklyn Children's Museum, 145 Brooklyn Ave. at St. Mark's Avenue.

When? Friday, Aug. 26, 5:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. (stories 5:30-6, pre-show 6-6:30, mainstage 6:30-7:15).

How Much? Museum admission (which includes concert) is FREE after 5 p.m.

Ages? All Ages.

 

Baby Story Time with Jon Samson

What? South African native and current Brooklynite Jon Samson returns to Greenlight Bookstore to showcase his "alternative family music" for the shop's littlest patrons. Billed as a musical therapist and professional goofball, Samson has already become a favorite at this weekly morning of stories, songs and interactive play.

Where? , 686 Fulton St. at South Portland Avenue.

When? Sunday Aug. 28 at 11 a.m.

How Much? Free.

Ages? 0-3 (older kids are welcome at their Saturday morning events).

 

Still Hip Bag Sale

What? Calling all bag ladies: Clinton Hill's popular resale boutique and event location Still Hip lets you shop to your heart's delight without breaking the bank at their seasonal bag sale. Buy a bag, fill it up with anything in the sale area—including kids' clothes, maternity wear, toys and gear—and leave with enough cash for a scone at nearby Choice Market. For the really bargain hungry, you can volunteer to help set up and fill your bag before the sale opens to the public!

Where? – 283 Grand Ave., between Clifton Place and Lafayette Avenue.

When? Sunday, August 28 from noon to 6 p.m.
