Grab and Go! Where to Take the Kids This Week

Our picks for entertaining the offspring during the upcoming hot week in the 'hood.

As anyone who has seen Super Size Me or the Nathan's Hot Dog competition knows, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Fortunately that's not the case this week, where each day offers a way to beat the heat and keep the kids happy at the same time.

A Train Through Time

What? The Transit Museum presents a weekly 30-minute “ride through history.” Costumed performers lead kids through a piece of transit history in one of the museum's vintage subway or elevated cars.

Free Friday Night Jam: Third Rail Projects: Through the Looking Glass

What? The weekly free performances at the Children's Museum continue with Through the Looking Glass, a cutting edge re-imagining of Lewis Carroll's classic tale, designed and staged under the direction of Bessie Award-winners Zach Morris and Tom Pearson of Third Rail Projects. This visually stunning, meticulously designed and choreographed experience puts a new spin on the idea of site-specific performance and public art.

Where? Brooklyn Children's Museum, 145 Brooklyn Ave. at St. Mark's Avenue.

When? Fri., July 22 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. (stories 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., pre-show 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., mainstage 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.)

How Much? Museum admission (which includes concert) is free after 5 p.m.

Ages? All ages.

 

Habana Outpost's Kids Corner

What? If you haven't gone outside in a few weeks, you may not know that there's a heat wave on. Fortunately the folks at Habana Outpost have you covered with this week's Kids Corner activity – handmade fans. Kids can create colorful fans from recycled materials, which at least can help on the walk home into the air conditioning.

Where? , 757 Fulton St. at South Portland Avenue.

When? Sat., July 23 and Sun., July 24 from noon to 4 p.m.

Ages? All ages.

How Much? Free.

 

City Teens Are Dancing Around Town

What? An exciting free one-hour concert of original dances created and performed by Young Dancemakers Company, an ensemble of New York City teens directed by Alice Teirstein with percussion by William Catanzaro. After the concert, audience members will be invited to participate on stage in a series of dance movements with the performers.

Where? Kumble Theater at on Flatbush Avenue between DeKalb Avenue and Willoughby Street.

When? Tue., July 26 at 1 p.m.

How Much? Free but RSVP required at info@kumbletheater.org

Ages? 4 and up.

 


What? Rising star of the kids' music scene Suzi Shelton performs “kindie rock” for the always lively crowd on the hill in Fort Greene Park. A winner of awards from Parents' Choice, the Children's Music Web, iParenting Media, and the National Parenting Publications, Shelton is gaining national critical acclaim as well as a loyal following in her home base of NYC and is sure to acquire a few more fans in Fort Greene next week.

Where? The Grove in Fort Greene Park (near the monument).

When? Wed., July 27 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Ages? All ages.

How Much? Free, with suggested $2 donation.

 

**And if you have always wanted to spend the night in the park (without an ensuing night in the lockup), you can sign up for a chance to participate in the Aug. 5 family camping in Fort Greene Park. To do so, you must enter your family in the lottery, on Wednesday, July 27th at the NYC Park Rangers registration page.
