Why go: Friday will mark the opening day of a new film festival that will highlight independent movies by black filmmakers. The line up is diverse and compelling: “Coming Back For More” chronicles a filmmaker’s search for the legendary musician Sly Stone. “Night Catches Us” tells the fictional tale of a former Black Power activist as he struggles to adjust to family life. The festival runs through Feb. 9.

Price: $12 a ticket.

 2. Parliament Democratic Club Summit on Friday

Where: 18 Putnam Avenue at 7 p.m.

Why go: Do your civic duty and pepper Representative Ed Towns with the tough questions. Health care reform? Our broken immigration system? Rising rents in the neighbhorhood? Ask Towns whatever is on your mind. The Q & A is hosted by the Parliament Democratic Club, a local group with close ties to the political players that serve Fort Greene and Clinton Hill. Refreshments will be served, and if you’re a smooth talker, perhaps you can convince one of the local pols to swing by Fulton Grand after the event for a few drinks and juicy political gossip.

Price: free

3. Jazz at BAMCafe

Where: BAM on Friday. Doors open at 6 p.m., music starts at 9 p.m.

Why go: If by some cruel twist of fate you haven’t checked out the free weekly musical events at , now is your chance. The Brooklyn Jazz All Stars — who’ve rubbed elbows with the likes of Tony Bennett, Randy Brecker, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Aretha Franklin, and Oscar Peterson — will be playing tunes starting at 9 p.m.

Price: Free

4. Super Bowl Shopping…and Drinking

Where: on Saturday, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Why go: Pickle juice and liquor is a surprisingly delicious combo. We here at the Fort Greene Patch offices take a shot of whiskey followed by a swig of pickle juice every morning, just to give the day a bit of vinegary momentum. If you’re attending a Super Bowl party on Sunday, roll in with some pickle juice and Vodka and you’ll knock everyone dead with the special Bloody Marys you can learn from Bob McClure, the mastermind behind McClure’s Pickles. He’ll be sharing his recipes at the Greene Grape on Saturday.

Price: Free (though the vodka and pickles cost money).

5. Super Bowl Sunday

Where: . Kickoff at 6:30 p.m.

Why go: OK, we all know that absolutely nothing gets done on Super Bowl Sunday that doesn’t involve food or alcohol. Fortunately, Mullanes Bar and Grill sells both. Head to the only sports bar in the neighborhood — it has eight televisions — if you’re looking to get loud and rowdy with other football fanatics. Just look out for those Steelers fans. They turn rabid whenever James Harrison makes a big hit.

Price: No cover at the door.
