Cuomo: Expect No Major Changes to NYC’s New Gun Control Law

Gov. Cuomo announced that apart from an exception for Hollywood production companies, there would be no major changes to the state’s controversial assault weapons ban

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver told reporters on Wednesday that the state may amend the recently enacted gun control law so that Hollywood productions are exempt from the assault-weapons ban, reported the Democrat and Chronicle.

But apart from that, Cuomo said, expect no major changes.

“I don’t know that it’s a real issue because they don’t use real guns,” Cuomo said of movie producers, noting the state makes a lot of money bringing movie production companies to the area and the state wants to continue to facilitate that.

However, Hollywood movie-makers are not the issue nor concern of gun-rights groups who are gathering in Albany today for a major pro-gun rally. Gun supporters are calling on the governor to repeal the law entirely—one they say is too stringent and hastily passed.

But Cuomo affirmed: Aside from a possible exemption for Hollywood production companies and other “technical corrections,” the law will remain in place.
