Check Out These Whiz Kids!

Two brothers living near Fort Greene Park are in the spotlight for the first installment of our weekly feature.

This week's featured are a pair of Fort Greene resident triple-threats: they’re scholars, musicians and athletes! We got a chance to chat with the busy brothers, Manu Herskovits, 10, and Raoul Herskovits, 8, who both attend St. Ann’s School in Brooklyn Heights.

Let's start with big brother: Manu, you’re in fourth grade, what kind of activities do you do?

I'm on a travel baseball team, I play first base. And I play the cello pretty seriously.

Cool! Do you have to practice a lot?

Well, I have a lot of other things to do! But I practice 10 to 20 minutes every day and do two classes a week at school. I've been playing for one and a half years.

How about baseball, how long have you played that?

Five years. I play in the summer and spring. I don't play fall ball.

What is the key to your awesomeness, to being so good at something like baseball?

To practice and keep trying. To remember what the people who are teaching you tell you and try not to forget it right after they tell it to you. And don't get in too many fights with your teammates because then you'll have your own teammates booing you and that stinks.

Do you have any goals for the next couple of years?

Keep consistently playing baseball and then get into college playing baseball.

What's the best thing about living in Fort Greene?

We live one block from the park and any day I can go outside and play baseball or football or whatever I want!

_______________

Well, what about you Raoul? You’re in second grade, do you play sports too?

I like football, but I play baseball. And piano. I just started like four or five months ago.

What about school, do you like that too?

Yes.

Do you do well in class?

Yeah, sort of.

Do you like having a big brother?

Sometimes. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

What's the good part?

Sometimes he's nice.

Any goals or things you're looking forward to this summer or next year?

I'm going to do all kinds of fun stuff this summer! Like going to Martha's Vineyard.

What is your key to awesomeness?

I always do my homework.
