Brooklyn Navy Yard's Sands Street Gate Restored

The gate's original brick and marble design have been restored.

After years of work to restore it to its original glory, the Sands Street gate at the Brooklyn Navy Yard is finally complete.

Brownstoner reported Tuesday scaffolding is finally down on the structure after four years of restoration beginning in 2009.

The wooden structure built over the gate houses 40 years ago was torn down to restore its original brick and marble design, Brownstoner noted, adding that some exterior details are still in the process of being completed.

It is unclear if the Brooklyn Navy Yard was able to secure the funds it desired to add bathrooms inside the turrets for security personel, Brownstoner continued.
