No Housing at Brooklyn Bridge Park?

A new report released on Tuesday found that Brooklyn Bridge Park could generate between $3- and $7-million without on-site luxury housing. The findings are the latest development in the longstanding debate over how to fund the park. Developers of the park say the only way to maintain it is to draw revenue from residents living on the park itself. Opponents have long argued there are alternative to building condos on the park, and now have this report to back up their argument.

Locals Not Pleased with Bloomie

Mayor Bloomberg has proposed cutting 4,500 teaching jobs next year as part of next year’s budget, and maybe Bed-Stuy locals were none too happy about it. “The direct attack on education dollars by a mayor who doesn't care about traditional public schools should be expected,” said one local. Still, it is likely that all the cuts will not go through; Bloomberg has shown a pattern throughout his tenure in office of proposing major cuts, then backing down after gaining other concessions from unions and lawmakers.

Deadly Daycare

A 3-month-old baby was found unconscious at a day care in Park Slope on Thursday and was pronounced dead after being rushed to New York Methodist Hospital. The owner of the daycare called it a “tragic occurrence” that all occurred in the span of roughly 12 minutes. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome was suspected as the cause.

Celebrity Chef Quits

The high-profile chef at Dean Street restaurant quit after only one month, with the owner saying that the split was best for both parties’ “mental and physical health.” Chef Nate Smith came from the popular Spotted Pig restaurant to open the new eatery in the space that was once occupied by the popular Tavern on the Dean. The new restaurant, which opened last month, has been hotly anticipated, but appears to be off to a rough start.
