Bike to Work Day Takes On Morning Commute

The borough's bike riding trend continues to gain steam. Are you on board?

The cyclist revolution isn't just beginning—it's about to take over.

On Friday, thousands of bike commuters throughout the city will celebrate National Bike to Work Day from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The event is expected to showcase the growing number of bike commuters in the five boroughs, which, according to the Commuter Cycling Indicator, now tops 34,000 riders travelling over the city's East River crossings every day.

The day's festivities will cap off a good couple of weeks for local bikers, with  announced last week and the recent approval of a new cyclist right-of-way on Ashland Place.

And while not an official Bike to Work Day event, per se, Friday's bike-friendly slate of festivities will also include an evening Arts and Culture Tour of Fort Greene’s architectural and cultural treasures.

As for official events, those include a ride from Flatbush Avenue in Ditmas Park to Downtown Brooklyn and from Park Slope to Manhattan Bridge.

The Arts and Culture Tour begins at 6:45 p.m. at Dekalb Market and costs $30. Bike rentals will be available for $10. Bike helmets are strongly encouraged. For more info on the tour and Bike to Work Day events, visit bikenyc.org.
