Bati Restaurant: Cooling Foods For A Hot Summer Day

In the sweltering, humid Brooklyn summer many are disinclined to dine on hot and heavy foods--choosing instead lighter dishes and salads.

For a meal that both satisfies this yearning and excites the palate, Bati, an Ethiopian restaurant located at 746 Fulton Street, strikes a beautiful balance.

On a recent visit, high temperatures outside were only slightly mitigated by a light breeze floating into the dining room through open windows. But a colorful selection of four vegetarian dishes served on a large disc of injera bread immediately began cooling things down.

Gomen (chopped collards stewed in garlic and ginger), Buticha (chickpea mash blended with onion and pepper) and Missir Wett (a savory paste of split lentils) were all served at room temperature and provided contrasting flavor profiles at times earthy, at others zesty and bright.

The most spice came from a Key Sir salad combining cubed beets and potatoes with lemon, jalapeño and more onion--so much heat, in fact, that a glass of sweet mead (a honey-based wine) was necessary to tame its fire.

But miraculously, even those spiced potatoes served to chill this reporter's internal temperatures. So if you're looking for something different and light, perhaps try this Fort Greene locale for Ethiopian delights.
