THE CRESCENTS ARE BACK!

Brooklyn Crescents Lacrosse readies for Fall 2012 Season

The Brooklyn Crescents Lacrosse Club announced today the beginning of their 2012 Fall Season.  The Crescents have been bringing lacrosse, North America’s oldest game, to the youth of Brooklyn since 2006.

The Crescents provide instruction, a competitive schedule, educational opportunities and good old-fashioned fun for boys and girls from Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade.  Whether you’re a novice who has only seen the game on ESPN, have a cousin that plays in the burbs or been playing wall ball looking for a middie line to join, the Crescents are ready to play.

The Crescents boasts players from all over Brooklyn and all 5 boroughs of New York City. From Brownsville to Brooklyn Heights and all parts in between, we even have love for our friends from the outer borough of Manhattan.

Our home field is the beautiful Poly Prep Country Day School in Bay Ridge which has been our partner on this journey since 2008.

Lacrosse has long been known as the sport of the affluent with beachheads at institutions like Princeton, Johns Hopkins and Syracuse.  Lacrosse has been flourishing in the suburbs of Long Island, Maryland, New Jersey and Upstate New York for decades.  The Crescents look to change all of that - taking it to the schoolyards of Brooklyn.  For every player a few miles down the road on the L.I.E. who has a lacrosse stick in his or her crib, we have a soccer, basketball, football, hockey or baseball player who can match him or her in the crease.  They just need a little help and the space to practice.

As Brooklyn has grown from an outpost of Manhattan into a city of its own we see the talent all around us.  Bright, wonderful kids and their families just itching to learn the game.  Waiting lists for soccer and baseball teams leave our youth languishing on the bench or wasting too much time in front of the screen.

Lacrosse is unique as a sport, not only in the athletic attributes it combines but the opportunities beyond the game it provides.  It is the fastest growing sport in North America from the youth level up through the collegiate level.  While today’s kids want to play in the NBA or NFL the competition in basketball and football almost becomes counterproductive.  Lacrosse gets you one step ahead at great public & private schools and after that to some of the best colleges and universities in the country.

Not only do we want to continue to bring lacrosse to our kids for their mental and physical health but also for the parents and families we want to use it a springboard to get these young adults in front of the admissions officers at boarding, charter, private, magnet schools and beyond.

The Crescents will be hosting clinics from September 9th through November 11th at Poly Prep in Bay Ridge and at McLaughlin Park in Downtown Brooklyn.  They also will be partnering with the local professional team, the Long Island Lizards and apparel and equipment providers.

About The Brooklyn Crescents:

Eight years ago six people (L’Quentus Thomas, Susan Murray, Kassim Howell, Jessica O’Brien, Dan Sheff, and Wes Jackson) dedicated to youth development and the game of lacrosse came together to continue the mission of bringing lacrosse, then a historically suburban sport, to Brooklyn.

The group had worked with the legendary Kevin Graham of The Brooklyn Admirals who for years worked to use the sport to empower the community.  After Mr. Graham’s passing, the founders, still committed to that original mission, launched the Crescents.

Now the board, consisting of the six founders and led by President, Patrick Drennan and Director of Lacrosse Operations, Dan Casey, have grown a team of 30 kids into a robust organization of 300 players.  Our alumni have gone on to enroll and play at some of the nation’s leading high schools and boarding schools as well as the collegiate level.

The Brooklyn Crescents Lacrosse Club is a fully volunteer run and 501(C) (3) non-profit organization.

The Crescent Athletic Club was a leading Brooklyn sports club, back in the late 1800s & first half of the 1900s, fielding football, hockey & lacrosse teams. Hence the adoption of the Crescents name.

The future of The Crescents, our beloved sport, our players and their families is as bright as ever.
