What to Wear? Let Her Tell You!

A new boutique offers personal shopping appointments for the not-so-fashion forward.

Sometimes fashion is best left to the experts.

Regina Stone, owner of Brooklyn Stone Boutique at 366 Myrtle Ave., is taking the concept of shopping to a new level by offering personal shopping appointments for women who want an expert opinion on what's in this season.

"There are so many kinds of personal shopping that it really depends on the woman who comes in," said Stone, who opened up the boutique three months ago. "It could be someone who lost weight and doesn't know how to dress for their new size, or someone who doesn't have time to shop and wants me to do it for them."

Stone said that the process involves an initial consultation with clients to determine their needs and budget. For clients who want the shopping done for them, Stone will comb through the retail world and present them with the best options.

For clients that want on-site help — "a girlfriend for the day," as Stone put it — she will go with them to stores and figure out which pieces work best. If the shopper is feeling extra-shy and has cash to spare, the boutique also offers private in-store consultations after regular store hours.

Depending on how much help you're looking for, the prices for these services vary greatly. The starting point for personal shopping services is $40, while a customized shopping "event" that serves as a private or semi-private party with drinks, gift bags, and specialty services including make-up and styling will set you back $400.

High-end fashion has always been an interest for Stone, who began selling women's apparel online four years ago before moving into her first storefront.

"When I used to work a corporate job in the city, I wished that there was a Soho-esque boutique in my area," said Stone, who has lived in Fort Greene for six years. "I look at this as the store I always wanted to have."

Stone said she finds working in Fort Greene almost as exciting as the business itself.

"I love my neighborhood," said Stone. "I would never leave the area on weekends when I worked in Manhattan, so being able to walk to my job now is so exciting. Who wouldn't want that?"
