The Bar for Bowl Games

Head to Mullanes to get your college football fix.

If you're a college football fan, the festivities continue long after the holiday season is over.

The College Bowl bonanza starts December 26 and goes to January 10, featuring all the top teams in the nation — and one Fort Greene bar is committed to showing each and every one of them.

"People take their sports here seriously," said Todd Sample, the general manager at Mullanes Bar and Grill. "You'll definitely see people crowded around the bar screaming and yelling."

Sample said the College Bowls usually draw in some of the biggest crowds of the year, with a few games in particular bringing in the most die-hard fans.

"The BCS National Championship game is always a big one, especially since Oregon and Auburn are undefeated this year," said Sample. "Ohio State is another team that's a big deal around here as well, especially since Michigan didn't do very well this year."

No matter what game you want to watch or how big the crowds get, there will always be a place inside Mullanes to follow the action. In addition to the seven oversized plasma televisions at the front of the bar, they have a large format HD projector at the back of the bar that can be lowered down when needed.

If you need a break from the action, the back of the bar is a more tranquil area filled with candlelit tables.

Grab one of their draught beers or 13 speciality cocktails and order something off the bar menu like the chicken wings (10 for $8.75), or try one of their American comfort food staples like chicken parmesan ($16) or sirloin steak ($23). If the game goes into overtime, their kitchen is open until 1:00 a.m. most nights and 2:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Even the lower profile Bowl games that take place in the early afternoon and evening will still see plenty of locals packed in for their monthly rotating lineup of lunch specials and one of the best happy hours in the neighborhood.

If the $2 off well drinks and tap beer, or the beer-and-a-shot special for $2 aren't enough to sell you, the free buffet should be enough to put any football fan well into the end zone.

Out of all the games that Mullane's is showing, Sample said he was most looking forward to the Discover Orange Bowl on January 3rd, when his alma mater takes on Stanford University.

"I went to Virginia Tech, so let's just say I have a vested interest in that one," said Sample.
