Scaffolding a New Fixture At Popular Neighborhood Eatery

Work on the facade of the building housing Chez Oskar expected to last through the fall.

It looks like the shroud of scaffolding erected two weeks ago above in Fort Greene isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

According to a representative of the owner, work on the facade of the building located at 211 Dekalb Ave. at Adelphi Street is expected to last "at least until it gets too cold outside."

The towering structure has diners at the popular neighborhood French bistro trading in Chez Oscar's trademark open-air ambience for some protection from the elements—perhaps not the best of trade-offs on an unseasonably warm Tuesday afternoon.

"It's pretty ugly, but it might come in handy on a rainy afternoon," said Johan Peterson of Clinton Hill, a self-described Chez Oskar regular, of the scaffolding. "Just not on a day like today."

A search of city Department of Building records revealed a checkered history for the four-story landmarked building.

Among several open violations included this decades-old write-up for failure to maintain a crumbling section of an exterior wall on the southeast corner of the building—not far from where Chez Oskar patrons enjoy their steak frites and Cassoulet al-fresco.

According to property records, 211 Dekalb is owned by Greene Fort Realty Corp., which also owns the building next door.
