Report: Fort Greene Markets Accepting Bitcoin

Local shops taking digital currency.

It's hard enough in this city to find a bodega that will take a credit card. So you'll pardon our shock when we read the latest: Greene Avenue Market in Fort Greene has started accepting Bitcoin.

Bitcoin, the digital currency that has been hailed as everything from a scam to the next generation of money, has made its way into the grocery circuit, at least in Fort Greene.

Green Avenue Market manager Dan Lee spoke with Business Insider, and said a promotion — a 10 percent discount for customers using Bitcoin — started recently, but the stores have been using Bitcoin since this spring.

The local retailer told the business news outlet that he started to see it as a better deal than credit cards. Bitcoin has no transaction fees, and retailers can change them for money immediately after the transaction is processed.

So Bitcoin enthusiasts, you've found your grocery store, and it's right here in Fort Greene.
