Hot Dog! 'Tis the Season For Franks

A number of twists on a classic American snack.

Frank, wiener, sausage—call it what you will. But by any name, nothing quite says summer like the good old-fashioned American hot dog.

And as the amp on summer continues to get dialed up to 11, a hot dog resurgence of sorts has hit the streets, cafes and restaurants of Brooklyn, with a number of eateries putting their own twist on an American classic.

So to help you navigate this brave new-old world of franks, here's a list of some of our borough's hot dog highlights:

1. Bark Hot Dogs, 474 Bergen St., Prospect Heights — Perhaps the epicenter of the Brooklyn's frankfurter love affair, Bark offers seven kinds of hot dogs, including the Kraut made with Hawthorne Valley sauerkraut and, of course, the Bark with sweet Pepper Relish. $4.25-$6.50.

2. The Landing, 20 Old Fulton St., Brooklyn Heights — Now celebrating its 4th season at the corner of Old Fulton and Everit streets, just standing in front of this hot dog cart with oak wheels and handles is almost experience enough. But don't let the 19th century ambience fool you—The Landing's franks have plenty of 21st century kick. Be sure to try the homemade Berlin currywurst. $3-$5.

3. The Great Hot Dog Cookoff @ Kelso Beer Company, 529 Waverly Ave., Clinton Hill — Started as a private affair with family and friends in TK's kitchen five years ago, this cookoff contest has grown into a full-on culinary event, with past entries including hot dog ravioli, franks wrapped in collard greens and steamed pork buns. All proceeds go to the Food Bank For New York City. At Kelso Brewery on Saturday, July 23 only, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. $45, includes "pimped-out" hot dogs, ice cream, Kelso beer and more. Tickets available here

4. , 459 Myrtle Ave., Clinton Hill — And then there's the cheap, yet tasty hot dog, which has sustained many a tired New Yorker on a hot summer day over the year. And Five Spot Soul on Myrtle has plenty to go around. 2 for $2.

5. Willie's Dawgs, 351 Fifth Ave., Park Slope — This list is admittedly not very vegetarian/vegan friendly. But luckily, Willie's menu is—and we're not just talking about the obligatory tofu scrap surrounded by a flaxseed bun. Try the Downward Facing Dawg with tofu or the Phoney Baloney filled with grilled, marinated carrot. $3.23-$4.23.
