Health Violation Fines to be Reduced

Small businesses said letter-grade fines have created big problems.

Restaurants being nickel-and-dimed to death by fines got some good news this week, as the city has reached a deal to reduce penalties on minor health violations. 

According to News12, the new top fine tier for 60 percent of violations is $200, down from a possible $2,000 at the discretion of health inspectors. 

Small business owners — restaurants in particular — had been lobbying the city for years to make the changes, saying that the introduction of the city's letter-grade system also opened the floodgates for minor fines.
