Great Escapes: Downtown Brooklyn Greenmarket

Shop like you're back on the farm—right in the heart of the borough of Kings.

Most of us know about the and how wonderful—and close—it is. But there's another purveyor of fresh fruits and vegetables not too far away, right behind Borough Hall in Downtown Brooklyn.

Like its Fort Greene counterpart, this market is filled with home grown, cut or baked products. In fact, nothing at the market comes from more than 150 miles away.

The market’s selection will vary based on the season, but it’s already gearing up for fall with delicious apple cider. It also has a huge fruit selection, perfect for grabbing a snack before running into work or on the way home.

If you're looking for oranges and bananas—don't bother. Instead, the Downtown Brooklyn market has a generous selection of locally sourced veggies, fresh baked breads and flowers.

Not quite full after all those fresh ingredients? Have some dessert over at the pretzel stand.

The greenmarket in Downtown Brooklyn is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. It’s open year round, rain or shine.

In fact, since there are 65 greenmarkets throughout the five boroughs, with 15 in Brooklyn alone, you can stop by no matter what neighborhood you’re in.
