Great Escape: Dekalb Market

Not your grandma's outdoor shopping center.

Retail developers Urban Space and Youngwoo & Associates were definitely thinking inside the box this time when they created Dekalb Market.

Literally.

at the corner of Flatbush Avenue Ext. and Willoughby Street in Downtown Brooklyn, this module marketplace supports up and coming entrepreneurs by allowing restaurants, designers, and musicians to sell their goods and services in a place that begs people to walk over and check it out.

As you cross the multicolored sidewalk and go through Dekalb Market’s gates, in front of you is a pleasant, tented picnic area, a perfect place to eat while enjoying your unique surroundings.

Old shipping crates, repainted in bright colors and each housing goods from a different retailer, surround the picnic area.

Some containers have funky Bohemian clothing and jewelry. Some will serve you a nice cup of Joe—while still others boast a full menu. One container is even a kid’s clothing shop.

Not only is this place interesting and quirky, but you can stop by pretty much anytime.

Although each vendor creates their own schedule, the market itself is open seven days a week from breakfast until well after dinnertime, so you can stop by before work, after class, or whenever.

As if that weren’t enough, the creators also track and disclose the amount of energy the market uses, constantly trying to improve and become even more eco-aware.

Make sure to stop by Thursday between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. (**Ed. note: This event has been rescheduled to Sunday starting at 3 p.m. due to rain)  The market is holding its first major event called Fashion’s Night Out. The event will include an hour of open bar, a couple of local Brooklyn DJs, and food provided by Dekalb Market’s very own vendors.

Dekalb Market is located on Willoughby Street and Flatbush Avenue Extension. It’s open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends.
