Weathering the Storm, In Style

A few suggestions on how to make the most of a bad situation this weekend.

Road trips have been nixed. Catching a flight at any of the city's airports is likely going to be impossible until at least Tuesday. Events like the , which was to be held in a "Zone A" high-risk flood area, have been cancelled.

So what's a Brooklyn guy or girl to do this weekend?

Convene a few of your closest friends—and whether or not the lights go out—light some candles and play a game of Charades. First, it's probably a good idea to check that you don't live in an evacuation zone (the color orange on the city's neat-o map). If it looks like all's O.K., go ahead and light up those candles, turn off those lights, enjoy the company of some good friends and let Irene howl to her heart's content.

Buy a good book. Savvy Brooklynites who remember how long the minutes, hours and days felt while semi-trapped in their homes during know how valuable a good book can be during a severe weather event. And seriously, when are you going to get another chance to tear through that three-volume set of Proust or those Nick Hornby novels you got over the past three Christmases? Oh, and a big shout out to , which reported brisk sales ahead of Irene today.

Head Out, But Keep it Close. Yes, there will be a few watering holes open in Fort Greene during the storm. Todd Sample, the general manger of , said "a skeleton crew" of employees will be making their way to the bar this weekend—though they expect to close the kitchen early Saturday to give their cooks time to get back home in advance of the storm. "We want to serve the local area," Sample said. "But obviously we aren't going to have outdoor seating."
