MLK Celebration On Monday

BAM is the place to be.

The Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at is always an emotional, uplifting affair, and this Monday will surely be no different.

The show starts at 10:30 am, and will feature performances by the a capella group The Persuasions and the Reverend Timothy Wright Memorial Choir, and an address by the author Walter Mosley.

Known for their covers of a wide variety of popular songs, the Persuasions got their start on a Brooklyn basketball court before making it big.

If you haven’t heard their rousing versions of “People Get Ready,” or “Let It Be,” maybe the high praise in a BAM press release will convince you: “They are to singing what Muhammad Ali was to boxing — invincible, innovative, original, beautiful.”

The Timothy Wright Memorial Choir will raise the energy level even higher with their troupe of singers, named after Brooklyn’s own “Godfather of Soul,” who died in 2009

But the most compelling moment is left to Mosley, the author of “Devil in a Blue Dress,” along with other mysteries featuring the hard-boiled detective Easy Rawlins.

After the festivities there will be a free screening of "Neshoba: the Price of Freedom," a documentary about Neshoba County, Mississippi, where three civil rights workers were murdered in 1964.

Monday will mark the 25th year that Brooklyn has thrown a bash in King’s honor. Get there early, the line usually ends up wrapping around BAM towards the Williamsburgh Savings Bank building.
