Jan. 23: 'Red Hook Summer' Premieres at Sundance

Spike Lee's companion piece to 'Do the Right Thing' debuts at film festival.

1. Mookie is officially back on the big screen. On Sunday, Spike Lee's "Red Hook Summer," a coming-of-age film produced by Fort Greene-based 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, had its first public screening at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah. An early review in the Hollywood Reporter said the film was "not the invigorating creative shot in the arm that the director's admirers might have wished for." Salon film critic Andrew O’Hehir tweeted, "Spike Lee’s 'Red Hook Summer' is a passionate, painful love letter to Brooklyn, NYC, black America & the black church."

2. The will perform a multimedia concert of Olivier Messiaen’s modern orchestral masterpiece, "Des canyons aux étoiles," at Roulette in Downtown Brooklyn at 8 p.m.

3. Brooklyn football fans cheered (or jeered) the New York Giants to a thrilling overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers last night. The Giants make their Super Bowl appearance against the New England Patriots on Feb. 5.
