Five Things to Do This Week, Jan. 21 to 25

Our picks for great events in the neighborhood.

Monday

Don’t miss at Brooklyn Academy of Music. Join New York City’s civic, cultural, and community leaders in honoring Dr. King’s life and legacy. Presented by BAM, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, and Medgar Evers College, this year’s celebration includes performances by Fort Greene/Clinton Hill’s own Brooklyn Interdenominational Choir, and husband-and-wife R&B duo Kindred the Family Soul.

Tuesday

See if you are the smartest Sloper at Johnny Mack's during their trivia night. Look forward to five rounds of fun and challenging questions with a winner take all bonus round at the end! Free to join for team of up to six players. The winning team gets a $25 bar tab.

Wednesday

Come watch Filmwax's Brooklyn Reconstructed Series present Last Summer In Coney Island at The Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture. Coney Island is known throughout the world as the birthplace of the hot dog, the roller coaster and even popular culture. But Coney Island is not what it used to be and the area has lingered for years as a specter of its former magnificence. Now, after years of false starts, change is coming. This film profiles a legendary amusement park at the precipice of transformation; a time and place where every summer feels like the last.

Thursday

will play at The Rock Shop. Eastern Phoebes is the home-recording project of two lovers: multi-instrumentalist/songwriter/sound explorer Ry Smith and holistic health guru/yogi extraordinaire Meg Bayley. The pair records and releases homemade EPs and albums featuring original artwork by friends. Click the event listing to read about the other bands.

Friday

Want to dance the night away? Come to Brooklyn Lyceum for Brooklyn Contra Dance Party. Contra dancing is a type of community folk dance. You’ll dance to live music with several partners throughout the night (it’s a great way to meet new people!)  There is no fancy footwork involved, anyone can do it. All the dances are taught and walked through with instructions provided from the stage, by the Caller. It’s good ol’ fashioned fun right here in Brooklyn!
