Led by former Greenlight staffer Natalie, this book group discusses paperback fiction; in 2012, the group is focusing on award winners and under-the-radar gems. For May, the Fiction Book Group discusses Jonathan Lethem'sMotherless Brooklyn, a brilliantly original homage to the classic detective novel, and winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award.
The novel's protagonist is Lionel Essrog, an orphan whose Tourettic impulses drive him to rip apart language in startling and original ways. Lionel works for small-time mobster Frank Minna, the charismatic King of Brooklyn; when Frank is fatally stabbed, Lionel's world is suddenly topsy-turvy, and this outcast who has trouble even conversing attempts to untangle the threads of the case while trying to keep the words straight in his head.
