Lee’s fearless feature debut (shot largely in Fort Greene) took the world by storm by appropriating the indie sex comedy, à la Woody Allen, to address black sexuality. A watershed independent film of the 1980s, She’s Gotta Have It was radical for its concern with a demographic hitherto underrepresented on screen: the cosmopolitan black female.
