*Q&A with Zvyagintsev

Directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev
With Vladimir Garin, Vanya Dobronravov

(2003) 105min, 35mm

Heralding “the arrival of a major new talent" (Dave Kehr, The New York Times), Zvyagintsev’s psychological-thriller-cum-road-movie follows two young brothers whose long-absent father returns unexpectedly. When he takes them on a road trip that leads to a distant island in the Russian wilderness, his abusive, domineering tendencies are revealed and the boys are confronted with not only the gap separating their own notions of fatherhood and reality, but also the very meaning of kinship itself.
