BAMcinématek Presents: Silent Running

Part of the BAMcinématek series Tangerine Dreams

Thu, Jun 7, 2012 at 6:50, 9:15pm

Directed by Douglas Trumbull
With Bruce Dern, Cliff Potts

(1972) 89min, 35mm

This favorite of many modern critics (Mark Kermode called it “superior” to Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey) and openly imitated by the likes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Duncan Jones’ recent Moon, Trumbull’s cautionary ecological tale, about a lone botanist (Dern) charged with caring for the earth’s last few plant specimens, is transformed into a surprising and perceptive study of loneliness. Screens with Ark (1970), director Rolf Forberg’s rare apocalyptic Christian short, which partially inspired it.
