In this classic whodunit noir loosely adapted from a Cornell Woolrich novel, a man is falsely accused of killing his former paramour, a beautiful nightclub singer. His wife searches frantically for clues to save him from the gas chamber, abetted by the victim’s ex-husband (Duryea, in a rare nice-guy turn as a piano-playing boozehound). The two plot to nail their prime suspect, a nightclub owner (Lorre), but the true circumstances of the murder are something neither can possibly imagine.
