(2012) 91min

In the backwoods of the Louisiana delta, dauntless youngster Hushpuppy (Wallis), her ailing father Wink (Henry), and their colorful band of neighbors stand defiant against the looming storm and rising waters that threaten to tear their community apart. Fresh from a rapturous reception at Sundance, where it won the Grand Jury Prize, and a showing at Cannes, Zeitlin’s feature debut is a cinematic folktale reminiscent of Terrence Malick’s work and David Gordon Green’s George Washington—equal parts youthful whimsy and Sisyphean struggle to protect a vanishing way of life. A Fox Searchlight release.
