Few bands stood out in the late 80s with more flamboyance and panache than funk-punk-metal-ska septet Fishbone, whose eclecticism was matched only by its hyperactive stage energy and exuberance. The band’s 1991 album, The Reality of My Surroundings, is a masterpiece of off-kilter genre-melding, lurching from crushing metal jams to Sly Stone-like funk—all of which can be heard in the 2011 award-winning documentary Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone and on their crisp 2011 EP, Crazy Glue.
