5 Things to Do This Week: BAM Honors MLK, Storytelling and Contra Dance

Monday, Jan. 21

Do you get today off from work? Head to BAM for its 27th Annual Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year's event includes a keynote address by Harry Belafonte, a live simulcast of President Barack Obama's Inauguration, and musical performances. Tickets are free and will be distributed on a first-come, first-seated basis beginning at 8 a.m. in the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House lobby at 30 Lafayette Ave. The program starts at 10:30 a.m.

 

Tuesday, Jan. 22

For a night of eclectic singer-songwriter music head to The Way Station to hear Lewis Lazar followed by Rebekah Todd. 683 Washington Ave. bet. St. Marks and Prospect in Prospect Heights. 9 p.m. No cover. 

 

Wednesday, Jan. 23

Tonight, head to Park Slope for BROOKLYN RECONSTRUCTED: Last Summer at Coney Island. The monthly series by Filmwax explores gentrification, development, race and class in Brooklyn. The documentary is followed with a discussion with the director. The Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park W. 7 p.m. $5.  

 

Thursday, Jan. 24

If you're looking for an interesting evening, head to LaunchPad in Crown Heights for Another Round Storytelling, hosted by Glen Rosenberg of Moth fame. 721 Franklin Ave. bet. Park and Sterling. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., and the open mic starts at 8 p.m. A $5 suggested donation includes a free cocktail.

 

Friday, Jan. 25 

If you want to break out of your Friday-night rut, head to Brooklyn Lyceum for the Brooklyn Contra Dance Party, where you can do-si-do and promenade the night away. Get oriented with the beginners workshop at 7:30 p.m. followed by dancing from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. 227 4th Ave. at President Street. $15.
