What's Missing from the Dating Scene

Our columnist laments the lack of cozy venues for a low key date in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

If you want to set yourself up for a first date that won’t lead to a second, head to Alibi to watch sports while guzzling cheap drinks. I have now had two dates at Alibi that went nowhere.

One was with a brilliant and adorable law student. We had a lot in common and, as we slugged pints while watching the Knicks, there was definitely chemistry between us. But he hasn’t called me, and to tell you the truth I’m not exactly dying to hear from him.

The Fort Greene and Clinton Hill area is missing a few elements that would spice up dating.

We could use some more venues to cozy up with a drink and listen to live music. and Cornerstone both offer live music a few times a week, but they are both restaurants, so it’s hard to meet just for a casual drink. Both of those places seem better for group-hanging, rather than taking a date to.

Also, there are very few places to take in culture besides , which at $35 to $90 a ticket, is only affordable for some. BAM does, however, have in its café most evenings.

But maybe I’m being too hard on Fort Greene.

I asked a barista at about what lacks in dating in Fort Greene, figuring, with a name like that, they must know something about dating.

But I learned that before people can think about where to go on a date, they have to figure out how to actually meet someone.

“What’s lacking is single men!” said Andrea Brito-Nuñez, 23, a barista at Smooch. “There are cute, single guys in Fort Greene, but they’re too shy to say anything!”

Fort Greene’s dating scene  could use some bars that don’t show sports on television, some low-cost cultural venues, and some romantic restaurants that don’t put such a dent in your wallet.
