Tour Clinton Hill’s Coolest Cribs Next Sunday

The 30th year of the Society for Clinton Hill House Tour is around the corner.

Once a year, locals in some of Clinton Hill’s most historic and intriguing homes open their doors to the general public.

The popular is happening on May 1, and it offers something for history buffs, interior design enthusiasts, or people that just like to see how others live.

“It’s really a look into people’s lives. These are houses that people own and live in — but they’re also a piece of history,” said Suzanne DeBrango, of the Society for Clinton Hill. “To see the inside of these beautiful homes is just amazing.”

All told, there are 12 destinations on the self-guided audio tour, which costs $25.

Some of the highlights include 280 Washington Ave., which was built by the Pfizer family in 1888. The building was recently restored, and according to DeBrango, the interiors are astounding.

Another intriguing destination is the Confectioner’s Union building on Vanderbilt Avenue, which an artist has converted into his home and studio.

“It’s been turned into an amazing live-work space,” DeBrango said. “It has skylights and an indoor garden.”

The tour will also include a stop in the , and the Queen of All Saint's Church.

Roughly 2,000 people show up for the tour, which alternates between Clinton Hill and Fort Greene, according to DeBrango. None of the destinations have been on the tour before, so even the die-hard local history buffs will have plenty to see.

“Some of the houses still have the orignial architectural details; they’ve been lovingly preserved and restored. Others have been gutted. That’s what makes it so interesting,” DeBrango said. “There’s something for everybody’s tastes.”
