Spring Into Summer Fashion

Keep cool with hot styles from local boutiques and chain stores.

Forget the layers of spring, winter and fall past. With a weekend forecast high of 80 degrees and the official beginning of the city beach season, this time of year is just as much about the skin as the clothes.

At the same time, summer fashion is also about being comfortable — especially for those of us sweltering on city streets without a timeshare in the Hamptons.

So with the goal of bringing sexy back and keeping it easy this summer, here's a select list Fort Greene-Clinton Hill boutiques and chain clothing stores with seasonal offerings designed to cool things down... then heat them back up again.

Gabriela de la Vega

Gabriela de la Vega is an accomplished local jewelry designer who opened her Fort Greene boutique last June. Featuring gorgeous dresses, separates and accessories, de la Vega’s storefront presents the epitome of summer style.

“The hottest colors this season are definitely pastels,” de la Vega said. “Lavender, peach and blue are very popular.”

De la Vega’s window display piece is a light blue silk shift dress by designer Susan Hengst.

“It’s great for summer because it’s light and flows nicely “ she said. “My favorites dresses draw vintage inspiration but are made contemporary for trendy, modern women.”

Bold print separates, bright handbags and peasant blouses are available for women who enjoy “more refined but still earthy” outfits.

De la Vega’s jewelry designs, which have been featured in Gossip Girl and InStyle magazine, are also sold in her boutique.

“My latest collection is made from brass and diamonds,” said de la Vega. “The pieces are affordable and have been selling very well."

Gabriela de la Vega is located at 88 S. Portland Avenue and open Wed.-Sat. noon to 8 p.m. and Sun. noon to 6 p.m.

Barking Brown

Clinton Hill boutique Barking Brown stands out on Myrtle Avenue with chic displays and an abundance of seasonal styles.

“Sheer pieces are the biggest trend right now,” said Art Director Sohh Choi. “They’re designed for warm weather.”

Graceful tops with ruffles and flattering, flowing dresses line the shop. On the back wall, an array of handbags compliment Barking Brown’s summer inventory.

“Neutrals have carried over from winter,” Choi said. “You can never go wrong matching a white, black or beige accessory with a bright outfit.”

For men, the boutique offers stylish watches and an array of hats by Gorrin Brothers, San Diego Hat Company and New York-based Grace Hats.

Barking Brown is located at 468 Myrtle Ave. and open Mon-Sat 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sun. 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

While not many local boutiques carry men’s clothing, chain stores do, often at great prices. Old Navy is holding a Memorial Day Sale through Monday. Men can browse a hip selection of graphic tees, including Brooklyn Block Party and Rangers t-shirts with low price tags of $6 to $17.50 each. Old Navy also has polos, shorts, swimwear and more on sale. For ladies, stop in for Memorial Day weekend savings on everything from tanks to capris to loungewear.
