Mural to Make its Way to Lafayette Ave. Building Walls

CB 2 passed BAM's proposal for a changing display of art on the walls of buildings that bookend a vacant lot.

The walls of two buildings on Lafayette Avenue might soon be a lot more colorful, if the Brooklyn Academy of Music gets its way.

Community Board 2 has passed BAM's proposal for a changing display of art on the walls of buildings that bookend a vacant lot where 31 Lafayette Ave. would be located.

The lot, which is across the street BAM's Peter Jay Sharp building, is owned and maintained by New York City.

The mural, which would be maintained by BAM, would be designed by local artists chosen in a competitve process. Though the competition would likely be open to all who were interested in submitting a design, strong consideration would be given to Brooklyn artists.

The display would continuously change, as a new mural would be created every few months. Community Board 2's Youth, Education and Cultural Affairs Committee voted unanimously in favor of BAM's proposal, which then went before the entire Board and passed at its February general meeting.
