Mandela Remembrance Scheduled For Saturday

Event will feature guest speakers and a walking procession.

This Saturday, in Bed-Stuy and Fort Greene, the South African community in Brooklyn will commemorate the life of the nation's greatest champion, Nelson Mandela.

The event will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning at Boys and Girls High School in Bed-Stuy at 1700 Fulton Street. The event will be an indoor celebration taking place on the campus where the city plans to establish a school named in Mandela's honor.

Mandela visited the campus during a visit to the United States in 1990.

After the event, there will be a processional and motorcade led by Public Advocate-elect Letitia James to M.S. 113 in Fort Greene at DeKalb and Carlton avenues, followed by a community vigil.

The vigil is scheduled to wrap up at around 1 p.m.
