Grab & Go: Where to Take the Kids This Weekend

Your best bets for family-friendly events in Fort Greene-Clinton Hill.

You know it's a good weekend when you can go to not one but two free scavenger hunts in the neighborhood — plus we've got arts, crafts, popcorn and more. In fact, we have so many great things to do that we added a special bonus event just down the road in Prospect Heights.

 

From Africa to Brooklyn: A Creative Journey

What? MoCADA presents a special family art and activity day to compliment their student exhibition, From Africa to Brooklyn: From Great to Great. Activities include an opportunity to screenprint t-shirts, have your face painted with African inspired designs, and take part in a treasure hunt — all in the museum's backyard space.

Where? The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts’ backyard space, 80 Hanson Place at S. Portland Avenue.

Brooklyn Hospital Center Community Health Fair

What? BHC holds its Annual Community Health Fair with free wellness checks for cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body mass index, foot and dental issues, and more! Lots of free health information for kids and adults, plus popcorn, face painting, clowns, prizes & giveaways!

When? Sat., June 11, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where? Fort Greene Park (Entrance on corner of DeKalb Avenue and Washington Park).

Habana Works Kid's Corner

What? Habana Works continues their weekend Kid's Corner program at Habana Outpost, offering free, creative workshops and games aimed at teaching environmentalism, wellness and community.

Where? , 757 Fulton St. at South Portland Avenue.

When? Sat., June 11, noon to 4 p.m.

How Much? Free.

Ages? All ages.

 

What? Dancewave presents Spring Celebration 2011, a stunning showcase of modern dance repertory performed by Dancewave's pre-professional youth dance companies: Dancewave Company, Dancewave Company II, and the Young Movers Ensemble. Benefit proceeds go to Dancewave's scholarship programs and public school residencies for city youth.

Where? Kumble Theater at  on Flatbush Avenue between DeKalb Avenue and Willoughby Street.

When? Fri., June 10 at 8 p.m., benefit performance Sat., June 11 at 8 p.m.

How Much? $25, $15 (age 12 and under) Benefit: $80, $20 (age 18 and under) – advance; $95, $30 - day of (includes pre-show reception).

Fort Greene Park Scavenger Hunt

What? NYC Park's fantastic Urban Rangers program presents another fun (and free) park event. Meeting up at the visitor's center, participants will search high and low across Fort Greene Park for clues to hidden treasures.

Where? Visitor's Center at the top of the park, near the Prison Ship Martyrs monument.

When? Sun., June 12, 1 p.m.

How Much? Free.

Ages? All ages.

 

The Great Brooklyn Storytelling Event

What? Highlighting all manner of traditional storytelling, the event features raconteurs from all over the borough telling their tales, plus an opportunity for you to join in by recording your own Brooklyn story in Sabrina Artel’s specially equipped “Trailer Talk trailer.”

Where? Brooklyn Central Public Library at Grand Army Plaza (Rain site: Dweck Auditorium).

When? Saturday, June 11, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (Sign up is first come, first served, starting at 12:30 p.m.).
