Grab and Go! Where to Take the Kids This Week

Here's a lineup of great concerts, face painting, bouncy houses and bubbles! Happy B-day USA!

Plane tickets and gas prices are up, not to mention the amount of traffic on I-95. But there's no better place for a staycation than NYC—evidenced by the wealth of great family events we found just in our immediate neighborhood. So kick back, and then kick off the holiday weekend early (tonight!) with our top picks for the upcoming week in Fort Greene-Clinton Hill. No luggage required!

Sing 2011: A Celebration of Youth Voice

What? YoungVoices/BigSounds presents a “celebration of youth voice,” a unique concert experience featuring young singers and musicians from around NYC including the PS 11 Afterschool Chorus, Beacon Young Voices Chorus, Urban Assembly School for Law and Justice Music Ensemble and the YoungVoices Pop Orchestra.

Sugardumplings: The Water Story

What? PureFlow Theatreworks, a children's interactive based arts group performs their latest creation, Sugardumplings, a surprising tale of friendship, quirks and magic, meant to remind us that wonder exists in every moment. With face painting provided by Emerose Creations.

Where? South Oxford Space, 138 S. Oxford St. between Hanson Place and Atlantic Avenue.

When? Sat., July 2 at 3 p.m. and Sun., July 3 at 2 p.m.

Blooming Babies: Bubble Babies

What? Nothing guarantees a smile on your kids face (or a crowd in the park) like bubbles. This weekend at the Children's Museum, you can get to know bubbles on a whole new level, exploring the science of bubbles. Bubbles of all sizes promised, as well as a chance to create your own bubble wand out of recycled materials.

Where? Brooklyn Children's Museum, 145 Brooklyn Ave. at St. Mark's Avenue.

When? Fri. July 1, Sat. July 2 and Sun., July 3 at 11:30 a.m.

How Much? Free with museum admission.

Ages? All ages.

 

What? keeps the neighborhood love going with its Tuesday baby breakfasts, a weekly summer event catering to its youngest crowd, and their caregivers. Brunch menu and coffee are available, and the morning includes infant-friendly activities, a story circle, toys and games. Doors are open only to toddlers and their parents, so that the kids can safely enjoy the space.

When? Tue., July 5 10 a.m. to noon.

Live Well Community Fair

What? The Ingersoll Community Center hosts a community building family fair. An assortment of fair staples like face painting, snacks and a bouncy house, plus extras like live music, a talent show, a cooking demo from Myrtle Eats Fresh Chef Yvonne Bodrick, and more!

Where? Ingersoll Community Center, 177 Myrtle Ave. between Prince and Navy streets.
