Rooftop Films Presents Where Soldiers Come From

What? Celebrate Independence Day by remembering those who fight. Where Soldiers Come From travels from a snowy small town in Northern Michigan to the mountains of Afghanistan and back, following childhood friends forever changed by a faraway war. A bracing reminder of the reality of war and its ongoing effects on many of our country’s young men and women. Pre-screening music from Zeb Gould, followed by the film and a Q&A with the director and some veterans of the war in Afghanistan.

What? A weekend chock-full of the best of one of cinema's best, Marilyn Monroe. During her brief career, Monroe worked with most of the greats of her time, turning in surprising and brilliant performances in classics like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch, and Some Like it Hot. And BAM gives you a chance to see a slew of them, in a series devoted to the unparalleled comedienne and icon.

Where? BAM Rose Cinemas, 30 Lafayette Ave., between Ashland Place and St. Felix Street.

Target First Saturday at The Brooklyn Museum: Vishnu

What? This month the free party at the Brooklyn Museum celebrates sights and sounds of ancient and contemporary Indian culture. Festivities include live music, performances, hands-on art activities, a dance party and the always special late-night stroll through the gallery.

Where? Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Pkwy. near Washington Avenue.

When? Sat., July 2 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

How Much? Free, though reservations suggested for some activities.

 

Habana Outpost's

What? Habana Outpost's weekly free film series continues with the timeless classic Grease, and really, what better way is there to celebrate America's freedom than singing along with Summer Lovin' while feasting on some seasoned corn on the cob at our own Cuban-American eatery?

Where? , 757 Fulton St., at South Portland Avenue.

When? Sun., July 3 at sundown.

Red Hook Ramblers Celebrate Independence Day with Music for Silent Films

What? The Red Hook Ramblers, Brooklyn’s premier Dixieland band, will jazz up a trio of summer-themed comedies at the Jalopy Theater. The six-man outfit will perform original music while the works of silent comedy’s leading lights flicker across the screen. Featuring Charlie Chaplin’s A Day’s Pleasure (1919), Fatty Arbuckle and Buster Keaton’s Coney Island (1917), and Harold Lloyd’s A Jazzed Honeymoon (1919). Jalopy was named NYC’s Best Old Timey Venue by the Village Voice in 2008.

Where? Jalopy Theater, 315 Columbia St. at Woodhull Street.

When? Sun., July 3, show starts at 8 p.m.
