Get Out: What To Do This Weekend

Second coming of Brooklyn dance party promises to have people grooving well into the night.

Whether you're a native Brooklynite or a new immigrant from across the river, there's always more to learn and to love about the borough. And this weekend our top picks celebrate that noble quest in film, food, dance and fun about BK.

What? The second installation (hence the two exclamation points) of an annual event “celebrating the most thorough borough!!” Though we're not sure what that means, we do know that The Ahficionados will be spinning late into the night and the dance party also celebrates all Brooklyn Geminis.

What? Based on a true story of her own ancestors in Louisiana, Andrea J. Fulton's play centers around Charley, the illegitimate son of a wealthy white woman and a black man who works on her father's property, as he faces the complicated decision of whether or not “to pass.” The show also features original songs, performed by singers and musicians on banjo, harmonica, guitar, saxophone, bass and percussion.

Where? , 54 Greene Ave., corner of Adelphi Street.

When? Friday, June 10 at 8 p.m., Saturday, June 11 at 4 p.m. (continues through June 22).

Homegrown, a Jamboree

What? Brooklyn Botanic Gardens hosts a day of festivities celebrating local flora, local businesses, and locals! A day full of all things local – including eating, making preserves, cooking demos, book signings, and music - all homegrown in Brooklyn.

Where? Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, 900 Washington Ave.

When? Saturday, June 11, noon to 6 p.m.

How Much? Free with Garden admission ($10 adults, $5 students/seniors, free for kids under 12).

 

What? Ballet Nacional de Cuba makes a rare New York appearance with a program featuring scenes from seven classical works in the company’s repertory: Giselle, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Coppélia, Swan Lake, Don Quixote, and the samba-inflected Gottschalk Symphony, choreographed by the Ballet's legendary General Director Alicia Alonso.

Where? Opera House, 30 Lafayette Ave. between Ashland Place and St. Felix Street.

When? Friday June 10 through Sunday, June 12 at 7:30 p.m.

How Much? $25-$75.
