Big Stories in Brooklyn Last Week

Here's a rundown of stories from our sister sites that we thought were a good read.

What are the big stories going down in neighboring neighborhoods? Here’s a rundown of articles from the other Brooklyn Patch sites that we found either intriguing, amusing, shocking or just plain interesting.

Dog drowns in Prospect Park!

The fallout from a drowned dog in Prospect Park lake continues. 2010 was a rough year for Brooklyn’s most beloved park. Mysterious dumpings of animal parts and other animal deaths put parkgoers on edge, and then the unthinkable happened: the federal government came in the middle of the night and killed some 300 geese.

The latest incident, involving a dog that fell through ice on the lake, is not so much a sign of foul (fowl?) play, but rather another reminder of the many yet-unresolved issues involving animals in the borough’s most important natural space.

Fire at a hoarder’s house!

A fire at a home full of a random assortment of stuff left a family on the street, and neighbors in awe of the junk piled up by the sidewalk. Fire Department officials described the dwelling as a “Collyer’s Mansion” — a reference to the legendary Collyer brothers who were found dead in 1947 inside their Harlem home that was overflowing with junk. Firemen added that fires are fairly common in homes packed to the brim with garbage. The second floor of the Bed-Stuy brownstone was severely damaged; firemen were able to get control of the fire before it consumed the rest of the abode.

Park Slope

Why are the F and G trains so f'ed?

Since we ran news of the to the F and G trains last week, a few questions have come in asking what the heck is going on. The track work is connected to the rehab of the Culver Viaduct, the elevated railway that emerges from Carroll Gardens, spans the Gowanus Canal, and then goes back underground in Park Slope. The antiquated structure has been in dire need of repair for years, and the MTA is finally entering a new phase of renovations. The only problem? It means no Manhattan- and Queens-bound service from the 15th Street-Prospect Park and Fort Hamilton Parkway stations.

Give the skaters a place to shred!

Brownstone Brooklyn has its fair share of parks — but where are the skate parks? A coalition of parents and shredders is pushing for a skate park at Douglass Greene Park. Last week the group put on a fundraiser at the awesome Brooklyn Boulders, where even Councilman Steve Levin dared to don the harness and get his climb on.
