5 Things: Acrobatic Faust, The Nutcracker and the Gentrification of Brooklyn

Brooklyn events you won't want to miss.

 

1. Be amazed ... and maybe horrified. Head to BAM for Faust: A Love Story "slapstick, horror, and aerial circus daredevilry and acrobatics" to reimagine Goethe's Faust, according to BAM's website. Show runs Dec. 12-16 with an artist talk following the show on the 13th. BAM Harvey Theater. 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $25.  

2. Be nostalgic. If you're looking for something more tradition, head to BAM's Howard Gilman Opera House for a performance of The Nutcracker by the American Ballet Theatre. 30 Lafayette Ave. bet. Ashland and St. Felix. Runs through Dec. 16. 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $25.

3. Be amused. Dreading the holidays? Know you're not alone by going to the Everything is Terrible! Holiday Special! at The Bell House. The evolving annual show offers an "a millennium's worth of VHS memories of misplaced sentimentalities, fist fights over toys for tots, erotic Santas, Nazi elves, and an endless parade of singing kids," according to Bell House's website. 8:30pm doors, 9pm show, $15 advance, $18 doors.  

4. Be educated. Learn your Brooklyn history with Filmwax's monthly series BROOKLYN RECONSTRUCTED. This month is a sneak preview of Su Friedrich's GUT RENOVATION. Each film in the series deals with the themes of gentrification and development in Brooklyn. Within those themes is a conversation about race and class in a city undergoing a startling transformation. Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture. 53 Prospect Park West, 7 p.m. $5 suggested admission.

5. Move the car. Alternate side parking rules are in effect today. The next suspension isn't until Christmas Day.
