(Brooklyn, NY) Brown Memorial Baptist Church will hold a kick-off event to support and create awareness of the restoration and preservation project underway for one of their twelve Tiffany memorial and decorative stained-glass windows, The Pilgrims. Unveiled in 1891 on Easter Sunday, The Pilgrims was dedicated to Ebenezer L. Roberts, the architect of the church’s edifice. BMBC was built in 1860 in the Romanesque Revival style as the Washington Avenue Baptist Church and Brown Memorial acquired the building in 1958. Currently listed on the New York State National Registers and the New York City Historic Districts, BMBC is considered a fine example of the early Romanesque Revival-style containing ornate details, such as sculpted medallions and notably its Louis Comfort Tiffany stained-glass windows. The New York Landmarks Conservancy has awarded BMBC with the Lucy G. Moses Award. The Sanctuary Restoration Project recently completed at Brown Memorial Baptist Church was selected to receive this Preservation Project Award for 2011. The Annual Moses Awards celebrates the success of historic preservation and its role in the economic, social, and cultural vitality of the City.

In 2012, Brown Memorial received recognition for their stained-glass window, The Pilgrims, through its participation in AMEX’s Partners in Preservation Grant program where BMBC was awarded a grant to restore the window to its former grandeur. In the style of Louis Comfort Tiffany the window exhibits the use of sculptural glass of varied thickness for clothing and drapery, painted faces and hands for accuracy in anatomical features, and plating of layers of opalescent and colored glass for subtle effects. Standing at 40 feet high and 15 feet wide, The Pilgrims depicts the struggles of the Pilgrim religious leaders, including abolitionists and workers of the Underground Railroad - a nod to Clinton Hill’s past as a hotbed of abolitionist activity. At the balcony level, The Pilgrims window features a large central panel depicting two Pilgrims approaching an angel. Flanking the figures are two side panels with text from Exodus 23:20: “Behold, I send an angel before thee to keep thee in the way and to bring thee into the place I have prepared.” (Photography by Trix Rosen)

The Pilgrims Restoration Project is supported by a grant from the American Express Partners In Preservation program, a partnership of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the American Express Foundation.
